34 Weeks (Weight Concerns)

I was all set to do a regular 34 week update, but got a bit discouraged after this morning’s OB appointment where the doctor lectured me about my weight gain and asked me exactly what I have been eating.

I know that my eating habits can be better, but I haven’t been eating any differently since the beginning of the pregnancy. As such, I can’t attribute anything to the rapid weight gain in the past month aside from my body just doing whatever the heck it wants to do. My blood pressure is fine (it has hovered in the 100/60-range for the majority of the pregnancy and today it was 96/56), all my bloodwork has been normal, and aside from some swelling, there is nothing to indicate that I am in danger of complications such as gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia. And while I would love to exercise, my hip pains just make it impossible at this point.

I know that every pregnant woman has concerns about weight gain at some point or another — whether it be from gaining too much or too little. However, it really depresses me to step on the scale to see that I have gained about 40 lbs so far. If you take into account the fact that I never lost the 10 lbs from the pregnancy I miscarried before getting pregnant again, that is a total of 50 lbs from my normal weight. Oy vey.

All I can hope for is that my hip pains will disappear soon after delivery and that I can start exercising off the excess weight as soon as possible. I also plan on breastfeeding, which should help me shed some pounds. In addition, I have had J promise me to help whip my butt back into shape. 30 Day Shred and P90x — here I come!

Don't worry! You'll be ok! I gained 60 lbs in my pregnancy and it was perfectly linear – 1.5 pounds a week. And every time I went into the OB's office they would say "well, you've gained a lot of weight haven't you?" And I just wanted to dope slap them. I mean, I can't be the only woman in the world who gains that much weight! In fact I've heard that if you're a bit underweight when you start a pregnancy you tend to gain more.

Anyway, 9 up, 9 down. Nine months post-baby with breastfeeding and some weight watchers and I was back to my normal weight. You'll show them. For what it's worth you look just lovely.

First time commenter-hello! For what it's worth, you are carrying a small child in your uterus and your body does what it does in order to sustain your pregnancy. Every woman and every pregnancy is different from the next… Shame on your OB for making you feel guilty. From all the photos you've posted, you look great, healthy and happy! Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise! 🙂

Don't get too discouraged or upset. Remember your body is doing what it was built to do. You just have a bit more extra padding to make sure that your baby is healthy and happy. As long as you're eating "well", what else can you do? Try to forget the weight since everything else about you is healthy and to savor the feelings of your baby growing.

Hey, I don't know anything about birthin' no babies, and I think you're doing just fine. I know the doctors and medical profession have a scale of "normal" for everything and I've never been one to follow any of it, despite being the child of a doctor. Normal is just an average.

No worries!! Seriously – you're PREGNANT and everyone gains weight in their own way. I will say that the weight doesn't just melt off. Between my first miscarriage and my pregnancy which I didn't lose any of that weight – I gained a total of 70lbs. YIKES. However, after birth, I only lost sadly 10lbs…but with just breastfeeding for the first month, I lost another 20lbs. Look – if it took you 40 weeks to gain that weight, it will take you roughly that much time to lose that weight. Doctors just try to be concerned but you do what feels best for you. Besides, if your Asian mother/mother-in-law have anything to do with it, post-birth, they'll be busy cooking food for you to eat and while you're breastfeeding, you have to be careful of what you eat and put into your body just because it'll reflect on your little girl. Poor Neddy had the WORST gas all because his mommy was eating broccoli! And a number is just a number – between breastfeeding and when Neddy was 7 months old, I ran a half-marathon, I was back to pre-baby weight but not pre-baby size because my body had shifted my weight around. Now, proudly when Neddy was 15 months old, I'm finally back to pre-baby size clothing again!

I agree – not to worry! I'll bet a lot of that is water weight too, which you'll lose fairly easily. Also, breastfeeding is the best diet ever! I gained about 25 pounds, but I've already lost about 20 since last week. Seriously. (I know, that makes me sound terribly lucky, and I realize that.)

Anyway, I still think you look great – a healthy (glowing!) pregnant lady.
