Last October, photographer Jason Lee’s über-creative pictures of his two daughters became viral. I was quick to share the item on my Google Reader and tweet about it, but I don’t believe I ever blogged about the father, his camera, and his two adorable girls.
Jason Lee is a wedding photographer by trade, but when his mother became ill with non-hodgkins lymphoma in 2006, he set up a website called http://kristinandkayla.com to keep her up-to-date and cheer her up with whimsical pictures of her granddaughters.
Kristin and Kayla are incredibly adorable in their own right, but the way that their father poses each shot to give each scene a curiously playful spin is what makes these photos so unique and loved by many.
Why am I choosing to blog about Jason Lee when it’s been three months since his photos first gained popularity on the web? Because he just released a new photo — one that I know J (and millions of others) would love: one with an Angry Birds theme!

I had actually not heard of Jason Lee (this is what medical school will do to your life). I love that you are sharing his work, and that he had such a poignant mission when making these photos. I read your bio. and was wondering if you went to a certain very prestigious research university in Baltimore, near 28th St. ? If so, I did too…and we were studying there at the same time. Yes I did! I matriculated as class of ’03 but stayed around for a while because I took a year off, then was part-time for a while. What year were you? It’s so funny that I would find a classmate through my blog!
I know! The blogger universe is so small 🙂 I started with c/o 2004, but took a year off and graduated with c/o 2005. I don’t know if our paths crossed at all, but I don’t think so… I did live in McCoy from 2000-2001, though, which would have been your sophomore year, my freshman year. There’s a possibility that we lived in the same building. I’m still good friends with Alissa C. (brown haired Portuguese girl from RI), who was a c/o 2003 IR major. I don’t know if you knew her, but yes, small, small world we live in!
Ok, but HOW did he pull off some of those shots, like the couch lifting and the broom flying? I haven’t been able to find a good answer any where. Does his Photoshop program do something mine doesn’t?
On the photographer’s Facebook page, he has an album called “Behind the scenes” where you can see how he set up the Angry Birds shot. Basically, he uses props (or himself) to position the girls then photoshops the props out.
