P.S. — Posting will be light today, as I woke up completely nauseous and then found some blood in my vomit-bile. I’m not sure if the blood came from my stomach, esophagus, or just my gums…but since it hasn’t happened again I don’t want to go to the hospital and am just taking it easy for the day. Morning sickness usually subsides after the first trimester, but I have been a lot more nauseous during the second trimester, throwing up practically every day and night. Just like Claire, BebeDeux is not making this pregnancy easy for her mama!
Ugh. I hated morning sicknes. I learned some tricks the second time around. Hopefully, some of these things will help you.
Morning Sickness Cures
I learned that queasiness is related to constantly lowered blood sugar due to the demands of the baby upon your circulating blood. (After a while your body learns to balance out the demand and you don’t feel so bad.) I drank water, decaf tea sweetened with honey, juice, and ate fresh/dried fruit (dried pineapple is my favorite). I took snacks and water with me wherever I went.
I made a point to eat a lot of protein. It takes longer to digest and helped me feel fuller longer. I ate a lot of yogurt, cheese, hard boiled eggs, chicken, oatmeal, milk, cottage cheese, and peanut butter. I always ate protein right before I went to bed, usually a small piece of chicken. I always ate small amounts of food every few hours.
I stayed away from foods that are hard to digest: beans, salad, broccoli. I also didn’t care for sweets like ice cream, cake, etc. Something about it upset my stomach.
I learned real quickly that if I slept poorly, my morning sickness doubled. I made sure to get to bed early and take a nap every day. For me I also stopped using ear plugs and ear buds. Those made me feel more sick. I also had to drive. If I was a passenger in a car, I felt really sick. If I had to be a passenger, I would eat a peppermint candy or piece of candy cane. That gave my blood sugar a boost until I could get where I was going.
To ease morning sickness I didn’t take my prenatal vitamin. I gave myself a break until I started feeling better. When I did start feeling better, I took a vitamin that’s made from food so it’s easier to digest. I like the Garden of Life brand.
Lastly, I just took it easy. When I went to visit friends or family, I just laid on their couches. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I didn’t clean my house for 2 months. I figured there was no point in cleaning something and then puking on it.
When I was pregnant with my first child, I worked late hours, rarely took naps and only ate saltines. I was sick for four months. I think slowing my pace and eating nourishing foods really helped me recover a lot more quickly this time around. I only felt nauseous for 2 months instead of 4 months.
Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Thanks for all that info! I have switched to a brand of prenatals that are easier on my stomach, and have been taking things easy (hence the nanny), but I really think it’s my insomnia that’s making it worse. And as the fatigue makes the nausea worse, and the nausea contributes to the insomnia…it’s just a vicious cycle!
