So with two weeks left to go until BebeDeux’s due date…
- We got a flat tire on our only car. And we discovered the tools needed to replace a flat were missing from our trunk.
- J’s company essentially screwed him over and the raise that he was promised came to be a lot less than what he was told.
- Comang’s annual vet bill came out to be more than twice what we had been expecting, which made us re-evaluate our budget for about the millionth time this month (note: new babies will always cost more than you expect).
- Claire got sick for the very first time. And while her fever’s been down for the past couple of days, tonight she broke out in a rash all over her body and we had to rush her to the doctor’s office. They’re still not sure what prompted the rash (Was it the amoxicillin? The preservatives they added to the baby amoxicillin? The food she ate for dinner? One of those, or a combination of them along with her compromised immune system?) and she is too young for an allergy test, so they prescribed us an alternate antibiotic and some Benadryl to help with the rash. I seriously thought I was going to into labor tonight from the stress and worry the rash has caused me.
And as I lay in bed tonight trying to sleep, the stress of the past few days, along with the realization that soon, I will be the mother to a newborn and a 13-month-old — in addition to the fact that come March, my in-laws will be returning to Hong Kong and I will be ALONE with a 4-month-old and a 17-month-old — HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS and I suddenly had trouble breathing.
I can’t go to sleep. At least not right away.

Maybe Claire has roseola? My 12 month had this last week – a few days of fever followed by a rash. It’s a common childhood virus.

The doc who saw us last night leaned more toward a possible allergic reaction or one-time sensitivity rather than roseola because when she had a fever, it was lower than what is typical for roseola, and the rash spread SO fast (we first discovered it on her back and within just 10 minutes it was all over her body). The rash already seems to be looking a lot better today after the Benadryl — thnks!
When you mentioned the ear infection, I was going to share with you my son’s eventful experience, but figured it probably wouldn’t happen to Claire. BUT MY SON HAD THE SAME THING! He had an ear infection and the first time, they treated it with Cefdinir (Omnicef). He was fine. With his second ear infection, they again gave him Cefdinir and at first he was fine. The next day, he broke out in rashes all over his body and it was spreading rapidly. My husband didn’t notice it (he’s color blind), but my nanny did, but my husband dismissed her concerns until I got home and noticed my son was short of breath. We rushed him to the ER right away and it turns out, he is probably allergic to penicillin. So now we have to treat his ear infections with Azithromycin (sp?). When he’s 4-5 years old, he can see a pediatric allergist to confirm the allergy. I asked why it didn’t present the first time, but my pediatrician told me many patients don’t exhibit the allergy right away. It’s usually the second or third time they are exposed to a drug when the allergy becomes apparent. SCARY! Glad you brought her into the doc!
Boy, do I feel for you! My daughter is Claire’s age and we just out that we are expecting our second in May. And we live overseas — on a different continent from ANY family. And my hubby just started grad school in addition to his full-time job. Just want to empathize and say that even though you’re a complete stranger I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers over the next months. Sometimes life feels like it’s unmanageable for sure – we just have to remember that it will pass and we will do better than we could have anticipated. Good luck! 🙂
I’m really surprised your doctor didn’t mention what my doctor mentioned when Little G had something similar. He had a fever and it was followed by a pretty intense rash on his back. Our pedi said that it was not uncommon for kids under two to develop a rash after a fever and suggested Benedryl and a lotion that I can’t remember what it was at this point.
Awww, poor Claire! Well, poor all of you too, I sympathize with the rest of the freakout, but I had an amoxycillin rash last summer and I was just utterly miserable, so I REALLY feel you on that one. AND the dumb doc I had went, “Well, you’re breastfeeding, so I can’t give you Benadryl so take some Tagamet to bring down the rash but it won’t do anything for the itching.” I finally gave in and took baby Benadryl after a day and a half of the Tagamet. SO thank goodness your doctor was smart enough to just give her the Benadryl so the poor baby isn’t suffering. I hope she gets better soon, and I hope YOU feel better soon as well. I’m going to be trite for a minute but God will not test you beyond what He enables you to endure. I’ll say a prayer for you this evening. I hope that doesn’t sound patronizing — I mean to be sincere.
