Digital Photography School has sparked another Canon vs Nikon debate by posting the following infographic earlier today:
As much as I would’ve liked to see more technical data, I can only assume that the resulting infographic would be about 5x larger due to the wide range of products each company provides!
On a more personal note, when I purchased my DSLR two years ago, I was leaning a bit more to the Nikon side solely based on the fact that my favorite photographers seemed to prefer Nikons over Canons.
However, J strongly encouraged me to try them out in person first (my choices at the time were the Canon T1i and the Nikon D90) and once I held each camera in my hands, played around with the controls and took some test shots, it was clear that I was a Canon girl.
Why? The body felt more natural in my tiny hands and the controls more intuitive…all completely subjective opinions.
Now I’m more than happy that I chose the Canon route, because J shoots with a Canon and I can use his lenses! 😛
Do you prefer Canon or Nikon, or another brand altogether? What made you go with that brand?
P.S. — In related news, a film industry vet is asserting that flying with your digital camera may damage its sensor. It is a questionable claim, but may have some merits all the same.

I ended up going with a Sony A33 and it for a lot of reasons but if I didn’t have my current option I would have most likely gone the Nikon route. The reason being I just love how solid the Nikon is. I have owned Nikon’s before and was used to them. I liked the Canon but it just didn’t pull me the way the Nikon did. Either way I ended up with my Sony and I cannot say it enough that I have made the right choice. I LOVE my camera I love what it can do, I love that I stepped out of the box and didn’t go with my obvious choice.
I agree with you. I also chose Canon because it felt lighter, and I had a Canon in high school pre-digital days.
I’m with you. Canon all the way. My camera consumption has run the gamut from Samsung, Olympus, Nikon, Sony and Fuji (anything from point and shoots to SLRs and DSLRs). Got the Canon T1i last year. LOVE IT!
I went the Nikon route for the same reasons you chose Canon. I loved the feel in my hands, and the second I picked up a Nikon, I could navigate it and access all the settings, etc without needing to look it up or ask for help. I couldn’t navigate the Canon in store and still find my company Canon (a T2i, which I honestly only use occasionally) extremely confusing. I also like how solid Nikon feels, but I can totally see how the light weight of the Canons would be a plus in other’s books.
I don’t really understand why people are so defensive (not referring to you. just people in general) about their camera choices and why there’s so much debate over whether Canon or Nikon (or any other maker, for that matter) is better. I know so many people who have switched back and forth between makers because some authority or other has told them one is better or because they saw someone’s photos and liked them better than their own. I think people should just go with what works for them for whatever reasons are important to them. In the end it’s not the camera that matters anyway. It’s the person behind it.

I realise this is an old post but I just have to add my +1 to Nikon!
Nikon just simply feels more comfortably in my hands. Though Nikon cameras + gear seem to be slowly taken over by Canon popularity – at least locally here, sadly. I want to upgrade my dSLR so badly, but Canons and their lens are quite a lot cheaper and common to come by, and I also hear Canons can use any brands’ (? or at least both Canon and Nikon) lenses while Nikon can only use ones made for Nikon – thus less choices + a lot pricier. 🙁
In the mean time, I shall standby my trusty Nikon D60.
Oh, whoops! Meant to also add that while the more megapixels the merrier, 10+ is really unnecessary unless you intend to print at a really large size (fancy portraits, art purposes?). So, the Nikon D5100 still wins in the Canon VS Nikon comparison just based on what’s there on that chart. ;P
