“Photoshop” in the 1930s

Close your eyes. Now, imagine your favorite vintage portrait. Is it of Jean Harlow? Audrey Hepburn? Vivien Leigh? Marilyn Monroe? No matter who, there's a very good chance that the famous portrait engrained so deeply in your mind was "photoshopped." Not in the modern sense, but by using film photography techniques from bygone decades. When the above before-and-after was posted to Reddit, experts and enthusiasts readily chimed in with stories, explanations, and history lessons. For example, the most upvoted response divulged: I have worked at a commercial studio since the mid 90's. We were still doing some of these things then. I remember working in the darkroom and dodging/burning prints, masking...

The Changing Face of Koreans

You probably presumed from the title of this post that I will be talking about plastic surgery. ;-) Well, you're partly correct. My intention behind this post is to share with you an article published in today's WSJ: "The Changing Face of South Korea," which discusses how Korean faces are changing over time — from tens of thousands of years ago to 100 years into the future. The Korea Face Institute (only in South Korea would such a thing exist :-P ) has taken 20,000 photographs and skull measurements, then factored in interracial marriage, plastic surgery, and nutrition in order to create the following "past," "present," and "future" pictures: The Korea Face Institute's assessment of a typical Korean face in 12,000 B.C. My Korean Skincare Routine: An Update

It's been almost 3 months since I ventured into the wonderful world of Korean skincare products. (Not sure what I'm talking about? See here and here.) And because I have tried a few new products since my last post on the subject, I wanted to give you guys an update. :-)  First things first: how is my skin holding up? I think I've mentioned before that in the past, after about a month or so of using a new product, my skin seems to adjust and adapt, somehow making the product less effective. This hasn't been the case with my Korean skincare routine at all! My skin remains softer, smoother, and more supple than I can ever remember. In fact, my skin probably hasn't been this...

YSL Fusion Ink Foundation: First Impressions & Comparisons

If you're a beauty junkie like me, I'm sure you've heard of the new "it" foundation: the Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation (otherwise known as Le Teint Encre de Peau). The YSL Fusion Ink is the latest in the liquid-to-powder-finish foundation trend that started with the Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup and expanded to the L'Oréal Magic Nude Liquid Powder (aka Nude Magique Eau de Teint), the Maybelline Dream Wonder Foundation, and the Lancôme Nude Miracle (aka Miracle Air de Teint). (It's no surprise that all four brands are owned by L'Oréal. I assume that with the success of the Maestro, L'Oréal wanted to monetize the product further through its brands with minor variations in formula at different price points. However, IMHO, they are not dupes and they are not...

Amazon Gift Card Giveaway! [Win One of THREE Prizes!]

When I asked if you guys were sick of my talking about Korean beauty products, reader J Lee replied, "NO NO NO. YESYESYES to more posts like these!!!" And others seem to be enjoying these posts as well. :-P   But as much as I would love to keep buying and reviewing new items, I would much rather spread the love first. And you know what that means, don't you?  ;-)   That's right — another giveaway! I thought about having the winner(s) choose a Korean beauty product I have talked about in my Korean beauty haul series. But I knew that not everyone has the same skin/cosmetic concerns as me. I then considered giving the winner(s) a gift card to an online Korean beauty...
