I read many years ago that the “proper” way to hang toilet paper is with the flap hanging down — after all, this is how all the best hotels do it, right? As a consequence of reading this vital piece of information, I became really anal about my toilet paper rolls. So anal that if I see the end being dispensed from under the roll, I’ll take it out and fix it so that the paper hangs over the roll.
I do this even if I am at a public facility. Or even at another person’s home. Call the bathroom etiquette cops now!
However, I also know that there exists a group who insists that TP should be hung the other way.
Now, there may be a solution to the eternal debate: a rotatable toilet paper holder.
Why haven’t I thought of this before? The best ideas always seem so simple, don’t they?
And to prove that this isn’t just a silly concept, here is the actual European patent page for the product.

This is completely unnecessary. As you say, TP is meant to hang over the top. End of story. If everyone just got that right this wouldn’t be an issue. 🙂 😉
hahahah I love this.
I 100% agree with you though, that it should hang over the top. (I also change it when I see it the other way!)
However I did hear from a mom friend of mine that if you hang it the other way it becomes much much harder for little kids to unspool an entire roll of tp – something to think about for the future? I don’t know if I’ll want to change, but I might after the first couple times this happens.
Genius! I’ve never met anyone who prefers it to roll under, but I see Lindsey Kaye has a point. My bathroom is too small for a wall-mounted roll holder, so it just sits on the back of the tank.
i don’t care which way it hangs… so my motto is however it ends up, that’s how i leave it. my dad, however, is a die hard "it hangs over the top" person so in jr high and high school i took great delight in switching the rolls whenever i went to the bathroom. 🙂 my act of teenage rebellion, i guess!
LOL, that is a cute solution! My husband is one of those who prefers it to come from under, which I think is very strange. Fortunately, I just don’t care enough to argue about it. 😉 I think he’s a freak, but I do it the way he likes anyway! 😀
I don’t prefer toilet paper rolled under, but my cats don’t roll it off the when it hangs that way. I’m afraid if you came to my house, you’d feel compelled to switch it….and then, when you were ready to leave, you’d note the mountain of toilet paper on the floor as you passed the bathroom on the way out!
The toilet paper *must* hang over the roll. The piece of toilet paper facing you must be the piece you’re about to start touching with your dirty hands, which is how it is with “over the roll”.
With “under the roll” the piece that faces you is usually not the piece you’ll be taking — it’s the piece you’ll be taking next, if you take another piece.
I don’t get it — how are your hands dirty *before* you go for the toilet paper? Or do I not want to know? I’m an over person myself but this doesn’t make sense to me.
Usually, people grab toilet paper after they’re done, if for no other reason that you don’t know how much to take.
Yes… but unless it’s your second helping of TP I still don’t see how your hands are dirty.
